A New Song...

[wrtten by Mike]
I love it when a moment in time injects within you with enough inspiration to let a little creativity pour fourth. (That last sentence was not an example of creativity, but cheese.) What better than a growing little baby to shake things up -- a few weeks ago, I thought it'd be great to write a song for ours. ...I guess you might say, the inspiration here wasn't quite as sudden, as I sort of 'decided' to write a song, rather than just started 'writing' one. In any case, I'd love to write something sweet, simple, perhaps lullabye-like, without too much lyrical depth or chord progression craziness to distract.

The good news is, I found a nice little finger-picking guitar 'lick' and some lyrics to go with it that should form a seed capapble of growing a little "song-plant". My first 7 lines of lyrics seem to be passing the "don't make me puke" test, so that's good. But it'll sound even sweeter now, as Tara will help me finish writing it and record it -- our first duet!

Our first song dedicated to the new baby. (And potential blackmail material for when the child enters teen-hood and adult-hood.) Wish us luck!

that's so sweet. you know, it's OK to let the velveeta pour forth when it's over your kid (well, not literally-- that would be messy, but you know what i mean). dan and i actually started writing a lullaby for anand as well, but we never finished it (such is parenthood). good for you for starting it before the baby is born! i bet it'll be amazing and lovely and beautiful :)

Not being exactly musical, I didn't write any songs for Mike. But I did memorize all 26 verses of a Russian Cossack Lullaby! It's all about sneaking up on nasty Chechen tribesmen and slitting their throats in revenge for having killed your father, brother, etc... Sweet! At least there are no boughs breaking and babies falling. Maybe I'll translate it for Tara and Mike, but leave out all the gory parts. Of course, that will only leave one verse...

Ummm... The chorus is real pretty though!

Wow! 26 verses of murder and revenge! That is quite a feat to memorize and I'm sure Baby Mike loved it! :)

monsoon mama: Hey, you should still finish the song. If everyone in our family does, we may very well have a solid children's album on our hands...

granny power: Ok. So THAT would explain all my nightmares involving being chased by Cossacks while "Row Row Row Your Boat" is playing. Hm. My song will not be quite so gruesome. :)

CONGRATS TO YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND!! I am SO happy for you!! Enjoy each and every day, every kick, every elbow in your ribs, every dash to the bathroom and every contraction, then you will lock eyes with your beautiful baby and never forget a moment after that as well!!

We can't wait to hear it too, even tho we're not babies. I'm sure it'll be beautiful and a real favorite.
